Mayan Ruins

Ruins at Tulum

Tulum is considered by many as the most beautiful of the Mayan sites, is small but exquisitely poised on the fifteen-meter-high cliffs above the Caribbean.  Take a cab or rent a car about 45 minutes from Playa.

Ruins at Coba

About 1.5 hours from Playa, Coba is a mostly full day trip that is best done by tour or with a driver for the day.  Ask at any information center in Playa.  During it's peak, Coba had almost 50,000 inhabitants, and covered an enormous área of more than 80 square kilometers. It is a live archaeological site today.  Even though hundreds of structures still remain buried beneath the jungle, archeologists believe Coba was one of the largest Maya city in the Yucatán, and probably fuctioned as an important link in trade between the Caribbean and the inland cities.  You can still climb the pyramid and you'll enjoy the bike rides between sites.  My top pick for visiting ruins.

Chichen Itza - An all day trip that should definitely be done by tour.  Operators are located on 5th Avenue.  Chichen Itza is the most well known of the Mayan ruins.  Though you can no longer climb the pyramids, it is well worth a visit.
