If you are staying in downtown Playa, are renting a car, or arranging your own transportation, please contact me a few days prior to departuere for a current vehicle permit to cross 5th Avenue.  If you are travelling by shuttle, bus or if I have arranged your transportation, you will not need the permit.  Without the vehicle permit, you are in danger of having to walk to your vacation home with all of your luggage.

In Playa – Restaurants are located on 5th Avenue, the pedestrian walkway, on the beach, and there are also many on 10th Avenue and on the side streets that cross 5th. Following is just a partial list of some we really like and some recommended by our guests. Please let us know if you find a gem!

Breakfast

100% Natural – Lovely place, good food.  On 5th Avenue just north of 10th Calle.  Try the poblano enchiladas – yum!

Wicky’s on the Beach – Full breakfast buffet with bloody mary bar!

Café Sasta & Starbucks – great coffee and a light bite.

Fruit Stands – Awesome fresh fruit, right at the corner of 10th Calle & 5th Avenue and stands at the ferry dock– not every day but take advantage of it when it’s there!

Lunch/Casual

Wicky’s Beach Club at El Faro -

Calle 10 and the beach at the lighthouse.  Easily the best burger in Mexico.

Great beach club, eat indoors or out.

H.C. Monterrey –

Specialty is arrachera which is grilled flank steak and comes with a baked potato or onion, peppers, avocado, tortillas and salsa.  The beer is very cold.  Ask for directions, it’s about 1st & 20th - 25th or so.

Playa Maya or Hotel Alhambra –

About a 1 minute walk from the beach in front of the condo – go to beach and turn right.  Playa Maya has awesome mojitos & lunch food was great.

Hotel Fusion –

6th Calle and the beach.  Good & basic, a favorite of all our

guests.  Fish tacos are excellent.  Beer is cold.  Great location.  Live music

at night – not too loud.

Oasis –

Next to Mosquito Blue at about 12th or so.  Fish and shrimp tacos.

Babes Noodles –

Just off 5th about 8th or 10th Calle – red restaurant.  Fast & cheap.  Across the street from Java Joes.  There’s another location further north.

Blue Parrot -

12th Calle & the beach.  Considered to be one of the best beach bars in the

world.

Don Mario  –

Mexican/Italian wine bar/restaurant at 10th Avenue & 8th Calle.  Nice folks,     good prices.  Big menu, good food.

El Terraya –

On the beach about 4 blocks south of the condo.  Owned by fisherman.  One

of the great restaurant values in Playa.

Tortas & Tacos –

All along 10th Avenue, especially between 6th and 8th are torta and taco

stands that are not to be missed!

El Fogon – Traditional Mexican – 30th Avenue and 8th Calle.  A local favorite.

El Cueva del Chango – Calle 38 towards the beach, nice fresh food

Dinner

Wicky’s –

The only place in Playa for really fine dining.  Excellent service, marvelous

food, gorgeous restaurant.  Extensive wine list, USDA prime beef, seafood

fresh from the Caribbean, the Wicked martini (yum!) and great desserts.

Eat inside in the beautiful air-conditioned dining room or outside on the

          deck or beach.

Casa del Agua –

On 5th Avenue, beachside toward the ferry dock. Great seafood, beautiful restaurant.  Good service.

Yaxche –

New location – 5th Avenue andt Calle 22.  Traditional Mayan food. Ya gotta try it.  ventas@mayacuisine.com 52 (984)873 30 11

Bip Bip –

Guests have raved about the fish and ate here 3 times in a week.  On the northern end of 5th Avenue near the Italian section.

Karens –

Lively, mariachi music.  Guests with kids recommended it.  Pizza.  On 5th Avenue.

La Adela –

Mexican Fare on 5th Avenue.

John Gray’s –

Fine dining on Calle Corazon off 5th Avenue.

Da Gigi –

Restaurant and Pizzeria.  Lovely courtyard, delicious food.  Located at 15th and Constituentes.  Will also deliver  (984) 879 33 87.

Cocina 38 – On 5th at Calle 38

El Bistro – At La Tortuga hotel on 10th between 12th and 14th. Great for breakfast too!

Pummarola-

Calle 24 between 5th and 10th Ave. Great and we mean great!  pizza and pasta. 984 803 4579

Xulam-

Brand new and located on the very south end of 5th where it intersects with 10th Ave. Already highly rated. Amazing décor and food, reasonably priced. A must see!

 SHOPPING/BASICS –

Super WalMart – between 8th & 10th on 30th Avenue.  Not like your run of the mill American WalMart.  In addition to beer, wine and alcohol, it has a fresh fish counter, panaderia (bakery) with DELICIOUS warm tortillas, an olive bar, a mole bar and some wonderful prepared deli foods.  For the most part, if you need it on your vacation, you can get it here.

Mega –  Similar to Wal Mart, but nicer.  Located just down the street (you can see it from Wal Mart).

Chedraui – At the new Plaza de la Americas – have a cab driver take you.  It’s a fun outing!  Great Mexican grocery store – I bought an OK bottle of white wine for $2!

Local Markets & Farmacia -- The small store on 6th is run by a very sour person and has almost no inventory, but the small store on 8th has sweet charming owners and nice cold beer.  The farmacia on the corner has most things and is conveniently located.

SOUVENIR SHOPPING – It’s all right there on 5th Avenue and the side streets and 10th Avenue.

MOVIES -  The theatre complex at Plaza de la Americas is nice and new and most movies are in English with Spanish subtitles.

Here’s the rest of what you need to know or Tonya’s top twenty one tips/answers/musings!

1.     Bring plenty of $1 bills – I usually have 200 of them.  Very convenient.  You don’t have to have pesos and most places will take Visa/MC.

2.     Bring lots of sunscreen.

3.     If you’re sweet, bring bug spray.

4.     I always bring an unopened bag of coffee for the first morning so I can enjoy the balcony without making the trek to Café Sasta, Java Joes or Starbucks.  Our condo usually has a supply of tea.

5.     Yes, you can drink our water.  It is filtered.  We also have a bottled water container in the washer/dryer closet.

6.     Bring your MP3 player, but leave my cord (very hard to replace in Mexico)!

7.     If you find any beer, wine or booze in the condo – enjoy it!  But please replace it so the next guest is lucky too!

8.     You are welcome to smoke outside the condo, but let’s keep the inside fresh!

9.     Bring your patience.  Mexico is not a type A country.

10.Sundays are great in Mexico – this is the day off for most of the workers. They come to the beach and enjoy their families.

11.Watch a soccer game with the locals – it’s great fun!

12.Tip!  A dollar is not going to make or break you.

13.There is a fresh fruit cart that parks on the corner of Calle 6 and 5th (just up the street from Luna).  It makes a great breakfast or late morning treat.

14.Go to Xcaret and float the river.  It is amazing.

15.See some ruins – Tulum is close.  The Maya were amazing.  Learn something about them.

16.Practice your Spanish.  Just Hola, Gracias and Buenas Dias show that you are trying!

17.Swim in the Caribbean!

18.Walk through Playacar Phase I – it’s delightful.

19.Enjoy the mariachis.  Request a song.

20.At least one morning, get up early and walk around and see the town come to life.

21. Do not put the keys in your pocket and then swim in the ocean!  We have a lock box - use it to keep things simple.  Loss of a key is a real buzz kill!

LAST MINUTE REMINDERS

From Playa Beach Condo, llc

No doubt you are very excited about your upcoming trip to Mexico!  To ensure that everything goes according to plan, I recommend the following:

1.  Contact your credit card company to let them know you are traveling internationally.  This will eliminate any payment headaches that may occur if your bank automatically blocks charges that are initiated outside the U.S.

2.  I really think it is a good idea to have a lot of $1 bills.  It makes paying for small items so much easier and faster.

3.  Be sure to share the phone number at your vacation rental (where applicable) with family, friends, co-workers at home in case they need to get in touch with you. And find out in advance if your cell phone will work in Mexico and related charges!

4.  Reconfirm any special arrangements with the  guest services manager.  Remind him/her of any other details – groceries, tours, additional maid service, cribs, etc. that you may have requested.

5.  Be sure to print and travel with your key instructions (where applicable) and directions!  They were emailed to you when you first made your reservation.  If you don't have them, ask me for them ASAP!

6.  Finally, don’t forget your swimsuit, sunscreen and a positive frame of mind – that’s all you really need.
